On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, within the scope of the NÜRDAM Youth Meetings, students of İzzet Baysal Anatolian High School hosted an inspiring scientific event. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın Kalkan, Director of NÜRDAM, met with students through his talk titled “What Are We Searching for at CERN? Capturing the Mysteries of the Universe with Detectors.”
During the event, the scientific studies conducted at the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN, the fundamental questions of particle physics, and experiments aimed at understanding the structure of the universe were presented in a clear and engaging manner. Dr. Kalkan shared valuable insights into the working principles of radiation detectors, their roles in large-scale experiments, and the development of next-generation detection technologies.
The talk addressed key questions such as “How did the universe form?”, “What are the fundamental building blocks of matter?”, and “How can we detect the invisible?”, emphasizing that science advances through curiosity and inquiry. Students also learned that experiments at CERN contribute not only to physics but also to various fields such as technology, engineering, and data science.
At the end of the program, an interactive Q&A session—met with great interest by the students—covered topics such as scientific careers, international research opportunities, and ongoing projects at NÜRDAM. The event was highly appreciated for inspiring young minds and strengthening their interest in science.
NÜRDAM Youth Meetings will continue to bring science closer to society and introduce young people to the world of research in the coming period.
