The Center for Radiation Detector Research and Applications (NRDC)

Recently, our center director, Dr. Yalçın KALKAN, one of the members of the NURDAM Advisory Board, who is also in his team; Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa University faculty members Assoc. Dr. Arif KÖSEMEN and Assoc. Dr. He paid a 15-day visit to CERN (European Nuclear Research Center) with Sadullah ÖZTÜRK. Developing a unique approach to the ionic cluster problem, which has become a problem especially in gaseous particle detectors and frequently discussed by the relevant scientific circles, within the scope of the studies carried out jointly with CERN. Kalkan shared his results with scientists within the scope of CERN RD51 cooperation. Findings that will meet with the literature soon; It is important that it will bring new angles to the search for a solution to the ionic cluster problem and enable the ionic cluster effect to be taken into account for the first time in the calculations made with simulation programs. R&D studies of the research are supported by TUBITAK.

Besides, Dr. A completely indigenous and original leaf was developed by using a cellulose-derived material in charge multiplier leaves used in GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detectors by Kalkan et al. This leaf was turned into a detector in NURDAM laboratories and subjected to signal and gain tests in CERN RD51 laboratories. The detector has managed to attract attention with its ability to generate signals at high voltages. The GEM sheet, which was developed using Epoxidized Soybean Oil-Acrylic Acid Ester material in order to control conductivity, successfully passed the electrical characterization tests carried out in CERN RD51 laboratories. This new generation GEM sheet will be turned into a detector under clean room conditions in NÜRDAM laboratories, and then it will be subjected to signal and gain tests. These detectors are the first GEM detectors, each stage of which has been completed with domestic facilities. The studies carried out by TENMAK (Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Council) Dr. It is supported within the scope of the project by Dr. Yalçın KALKAN.

In addition, the radical changes to be made by the European Commission in the scientific organization of CERN were closely followed and various meetings were held with the authorities. Our university's participation as a founding institute in the DRD1 coded Gas Detectors Research Group to be established within the new structure of CERN has been finalized, and preparations for the official contract (MoI document) are continuing. Following the completion of the finalization process of the founding institutes, our rector Prof. Dr. An official contract will be signed between Mustafa ALİŞARLI and CERN Director, Fabiola GIANOTI. Thus, for the first time, NURDAM at our university will continue to work directly and officially as an institute registered with CERN. In addition, an application has been made for our university to join the newly restructured DRD3 Semiconductor Detectors Research Group as a founding institute, and the structuring studies are expected to begin. In addition, initiatives continue for the research group, whose name and code has not yet been disclosed, and whose installation work will just start.

Thus, NURDAM, which will carry out studies in the field of detector and sensor technologies as an official member institute in at least three separate research groups within CERN, will not only contribute to the international recognition of our university, but also find a wide ground for new ideas and global projects.
